ISO 50001 : Energy Management System (EnMS)
The purpose of this International Standard is to enable organizations to establish the systems and processes necessary to improve energy performance, including energy efficiency, use, and consumption.
This International Standard specifies requirements of an energy management system (EnMS) for an organization to develop and implement an energy policy, establish objectives, targets, and action plans, which take into account legal requirements and information related to significant energy use.
This International Standard specifies requirements for an organization to establish, implement, maintain and improve an energy management system, which enables an organization to take a systematic approach, in order to achieve continual improvement of energy performance, including energy efficiency, energy use and consumption.
This International Standard specifies requirements applicable to energy use and consumption, including measurement, documentation and reporting, design and procurement practices for equipment, systems, processes, and personnel that contribute to energy performance. This international Standard applies to all variables affecting energy performance that can be monitored and influenced by the organization. This international standard does not prescribe specific performance criteria with respect to energy. This International Standard for EnMS has been designed to be used independently, but it can be aligned or integrated with other management systems.
This International Standard is based on the Plan-Do-Check-Act continual improvement framework and incorporates energy management into everyday organizational practices.
This approach can be briefly described as follows:
- Plan: conduct the energy review and establish the baseline, energy performance indicators (EnP!s), objectives, targets and action plans necessary to deliver results in accordance with opportunities to improve energy performance and the organization's energy policy.
- Do: implement the energy management action plans.
- Check: monitor and measure processes and the key characteristics of its operations that determine energy performance against the energy policy and objectives and report the results.
- Act: take actions to continually improve energy performance and the EnMS
APPLICATION
Implementation of this standard is intended to lead to reductions in greenhouse gas emissions, energy cost, and other related environmental impacts, through systematic management of energy. This international standard is applicable to all types and sizes of organizations irrespective of geographical, cultural or social conditions. Successful implementation depends on commitment from all levels and functions of the organization, and especially from top management.
This International Standard is applicable irrespective of the types of energy used.
Worldwide application of this International Standard contributes to more efficient use of available energy sources, enhanced competitiveness, and to reduce greenhouse gases emissions and other related environmental impacts.
Application of this International Standard can be tailored to fit the requirements of an organization - including the complexity of the system, degree of documentation, and resources - and applies to the activities under the control of the organization.
SCOPE
This International Standard is applicable to any organization that wishes to ensure
that it conforms to its stated energy policy and to demonstrate such conformance
to others. This can be confirmed by self-evaluation and self declaration of conformance
or by certification of the energy management system by an external organization.
ISO 50001:2011 KNOW MORE
How does ISO 50001 fit with existing Management Systems (e.g., ISO 9001, ISO 14001)?
ISO 50001 is based on a management system model that is already understood and implemented by organizations worldwide. To provide compatibility and integration opportunities, the standard uses the Plan-Do-Check-Act approach employed in ISO 9001 and ISO 14001. ISO 50001 can make a positive difference for organizations of all types in the very near future by improving energy management practices
Does my organization need to be certified to ISO 50001 to improve our energy management?
No. Organizations can take many steps to start improving energy management without becoming certified. However, certification to ISO 50001 provides a structured approach that incorporates energy management into company culture, resulting in sustained energy savings and continual improvements in energy performance over time. This can help justify initial investments in energy projects and ensure return on investment. Without a structured approach, there is no guarantee that energy savings will be sustained or that return-on-investment will be maximized.
Why should my company care about ISO 50001?
Energy is a critical component of an organization's operations and can be one of the largest controllable costs, depending on the activities. Improved energy performance helps organizations maximize the use of their energy sources and energy-related assets, thus reducing both energy cost and consumption. ISO 50001 provides a framework for organizations to make positive contributions toward reducing depletion of energy resources and mitigating worldwide effects of energy use, such as global warming, while improving the efficiency of organizational operations related to energy.
